10 Great Sheffield Events Still To Come In 2016

We might already be in August, but there are still plenty of great events for you to attend in Sheffield this year.

 

December

Sheffield Christmas Markets

Throughout much of November and December, Fargate and the Peace Gardens are transformed into a winter wonderland. Cabins are built for the sale of craft items and culinary treats and are always a great place to fill your belly and make Christmas present purchases.

Given that these markets are free to enter and available to visit for over a month, this is one that you’re sure to be able to fit into your calendar.

Victorian Christmas Market

A Christmas market that offers something different to other similar events held annually in Sheffield, this event at Kelham Island Museum is a great one for all the family.

The magical world of Dickens is brought to life at the venue, as over 120 market stalls are built to play host to various culinary and craft traders. A Family Fairground, Music Hall Stage and Santa Industries Co. Grotto and Reindeer will provide further entertainment to attendees.

Sharrow Vale Christmas Market

As time has gone by, Sharrow Vale market has grown in popularity to include three events throughout the calendar year. One of these is always held at Christmas, with this year’s market set to take place on Sunday 4th December.

It will undoubtedly provide one of the best Christmas market experiences in Sheffield, with unique food and craft stalls sure to pack the street to the brim. Local shops and cafes will also open their doors to mark the occasion. A great place to grab some last minute Christmas presents!

Christmas Lights Switch On

Always one that’s sure to get you in the festive spirit, the Christmas Lights Switch On brings plenty of foot traffic to the city centre. Various acts and performances are often integrated as part of the event, whilst Christmas-themed stalls and decorations tend to be introduced to notable city centre areas.

British Figure Skating Championships

As well as hosting ice hockey matches for the Sheffield Steelers, iceSheffield also plays host to an abundance of other sporting events throughout the year.

In the remainder of 2016, one of the clear highlights will be the British Figure Skating Championships. Sure to provide 6 days of the best in British figure skating, this is a great idea for a more unusual day out.

ASA National County Team Swimming Championships

Following the success of the recent ASA Swimming Championships held at Ponds Forge, the National County Team Championships will follow on Sunday 23rd October.

Asda Foundation Sheffield 10k

A new running event for 2016, the Asda Foundation Sheffield 10k will add to the similarly structured Sheffield 10k that’s now been running for a number of years. It will provide another chance for thousands of runners to visit the streets of Sheffield to compete and raise money for charity.

The route will begin on Arundel Gate in the city centre and take runners via Charter Row, Ecclesall Road and Endcliffe Park.

September

Chatsworth Country Fair

Sure to be a great three days out in the countryside, Chatsworth Country Fair will draw plenty of interest from Sheffield Folk. Showcasing everything from local rural crafts to a wide variety of outstanding local produce, there is truly something for everyone there.

As well as the shopping on offer, the weekend will feature a performance from the Red Arrows, falconry demonstrations, parachute displays and a cookery theatre, which will play host to celebrity guests including Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry CBE.

Art in the Gardens

As one of the largest outdoor art exhibitions in the north of England, Art in the Gardens always proves popular with Sheffield folk.

Held in the beautiful Botanical Gardens, it provides selected artists and craft makers with a platform from which people can celebrate their various crafts. As well as enjoying the superb surroundings, you’re also able to buy artwork directly from the exhibitors.

Sheffield Film and Comic Con

Following on from the success of the 2015 event, Sheffield Film and Comic Con is back again this year at Sheffield Arena.

Running from 9 – 6 on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th August, it should feature well known personalities from the TV, Film and Comic worlds. There will also be a wide variety of activities on offer, including:

  • Photo shoots
  • Stars
  • Panels
  • Autograph sessions
  • Hundreds of stalls
